Did we miss any you think belong on this list? Let us know in the comments section. Steven Marx has been playing games on the Macintosh since his brother brought home a used Mac k in How about Torchlight II.
But I think ultimately Ric and I decided to focus on the newer games if we were going with a series. Early versions of it were incredibly buggy and required lowering graphics and other settings just to make it sort of playable.
KOTOR2 has so far been much more stable for me. Definitely belongs on your list. I would add Drakensang online to this list. Its free to join, video quality graphics, just do the opening quests.
Right now there is an event in the capital city of Kingshill, involving going into the sewers to fight the giant rats and other nasties.
Easier for everyone to find it. Guild Wars 2. Game client still in Beta mode, but been running it while bugging along with the rest of the gameworld population for four years now.
It is beautiful to say the least, and is free to play for starters till you are tired of not being able to use more than say chat and messaging, but if you have your own people on voice comms it is fine.
You can max out your character till level 80, but not use the trading post on a free account. Look out for Christmas or pre-expansion sales.
The multiplayer PvP is engrossing, once you get into it, too, but has its own spirit. I hear good things about that game. Have you guys been looking up Black Geyser at all?
It looks like a very interesting take on isometric RPG. First time I hear about it, which is strange seeing how it raised over a thousand dollars!
It certainly looks like, that screenshot on their kickstarter immediately reminded me of Pillars of Eternity.
Planetscape: Torment was a recent discovery for me, too. Has anyone recently played Torment: Tides of Numenera? Is there that much difference between the various editions, besides the price?
Some reviews talk about its buggy performance, but maybe they have been addressed in more recent updates.
Really odd. The enhanced edition of Icewind Dale is a spectacularly good RPG experience — the music and atmosphere are second-to-none, with very modest system requirements.
Your email address will not be published. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. This free tool uses the data from every game we've ever tested to show you what games your Mac can run.
And luckily, MacOS has benefited from all of these new entries. In this guide:. Pillars of Eternity 2. Last updated: July 21, We have tested over 10 new games released since this guide was first created in September and decided to crown a new all-around champion.
How We Decide We purchase all of the games we review with our own funds. Full Review. Divinity: Original Sin. Also great RPG Mac choices.
Darkest Dungeon. Diablo 3. Crypt of the NecroDancer. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition. To do this you participate in a series of battles, or Rites, 3v3 style; that ressemble more a sporting match than a battle.
In fact, some call it the succesor NBA Jam needed. With a unique battle system and beautiful new world to explore, Pyre is also lightweight enough to run on just about any recent Mac.
The Banner Saga takes place in a Viking-inspired setting. It uses beautiful, hand-drawn 2D graphics and animations and, as with many of the games on this list, focuses as much on story and character as on combat.
With a focus on exploration and combat, Torchlight 2 builds on the original with new classes, more and better loot and the return of randomly generated levels for maximum replayability.
While a little late to release after its successful Kickstarter, PoE delivered on its promise of a return to old-fashioned RPG gaming. Pillars features extreme character customization, a large world to explore, an engaging story, and a real-time with pause combat system, all executed beautifully.
That said, this modern classic still requires a moderately powerful Mac. Seriously, where do they find the time? In fact this game is so story-driven you can actually avoid much of the combat through your words and actions.
Much like Tyranny, complaints center around the amount of reading involved, with people comparing it to a book or choose-your-own-adventure game.
With loads of new content, new music and a revamped interface and combat system, Dragonfall certainly feels like its own game.
The combination of magic and technology has always been a hallmark of the Shadowrun series, and this entry is no exception.
Clearly, this is an homage to classic s JRPGs. Known for its character customization options and complex but learnable battle system, Nightwar also features a lot of grind at certain parts of the game.
Randomized dungeons, the excellent battle system and the beautiful surroundings do help alleviate some of the tedium. Unique in that ground only appears as you move around, making movement tricky, Bastion also feels less like an RPG than many on this list.
What begins as a simple power fantasy evolves into a challenging and cerebral game bordering on a puzzler, testing your problem-solving skills as much as your reflexes.
In the game, you are able to take control of three separate factions: Terran, Zerg, and Protoss. If you just blink at the wrong time, thousands of Zerglings will bring your base crashing to the ground.
You play as protagonist Chell as she attempts to break out of the giant Aperture research facility and claim her freedom.
Actors Stephen Merchant and J. Simmons voice recurring characters and their work in the game is spot-on.
Though the plot deals with a serious conflict the game is rife with well-timed comedy at every turn. Portal 2 is one of the most unique experiences in gaming and also one of the most comedic.

Why develop a roguelike game or a deck-building strategy game when you could mash them both together to create something even better?
Slay the Spire tasks you with climbing the titular Spire, which changes in classic roguelike fashion with each run you take, and the cards you collect as you try and fail to complete it will lead to better decks and a better chance of total victory.
Right now, the game comes with more than cards and items, as well as a custom mode option and special relics to further enhance your deck.
Despite such a novel concept, it feels familiar in all the right ways. Gone Home is one of those rare games that thrusts the player into an environment and just lets them explore.
Gone Home has a slow but incredible story build-up accentuated by its intense atmosphere. It begs players to explore and reveal the mysteries of a big empty home with a dark and sad story to tell.
Read our full Gone Home review. Watch your back because several enemies such as zombies or creepers are out to wreak havoc on your character and will even blow up your landscapes.
Its pixelated, 8-bit graphics may turn some people away, though the gameplay is enough to please any and all gamers.
Kerbal Space Program presents an odd combination of elements. Despite the cartoonish graphics and goofy, minion-esque creatures that populate the game, KSP is no joke.
Flight simulation has never been so deep, so engaging, or so addicting, and Kerbal provides a playground for both the casual gamer and the serious physicist by balancing serious rocket-building considerations — how many Kerbals must die before you finally reach the moon?
You can spend countless hours learning how to build a rocket capable of reaching the moon, however, only to realize the lunar frontier is hardly the final one.
With incredible replay value, KSP is one of the few games that prove both educational and fun. Video game settings, as a whole, are remarkably similar to each other, tending to focus on battlefields and areas of conflict that pit people against each other.Mac und Gaming - das geht nicht? For players interested in something a little more hardcore, Dota 2 has you covered. Its predecessor began its life as a mod for Warcraft III , but the sequel has garnered its own following of dedicated MOBA players who play almost nothing else.
Just be warned that the game will take up most of your free time if you fall down the rabbit hole. Jonathan Blow, the mastermind behind acclaimed indie game Braid , took his sweet time developing follow-up game The Witness , but it was well worth the wait.
It requires a keen eye and plenty of exploration, but the game never tries to frustrate you solely to make it seem more challenging or difficult.
Read our full The Witness review. Since its release Blizzard has remained steadfast in its dedication to listening to its users and updating the game accordingly.
Hack and slash your way through the land of Sanctuary as you fend off various demonic hordes and level up your character.
Read our full Diablo III review. The breadth of content available, even in the base version, is staggering. You can spend your time joining dozens of others to take down a dragon, take on assassination contracts from the Dark Brotherhood, or simply hang around marketplaces, trading raw materials with players that have an insanely high crafting skill.
That leads to a sense of openness, where the only thing holding you back is how long you want to spend in-game. The best part? Since your account comes with you across platforms, you can even start playing on your phone before coming home and firing up the game on your Mac, instead.
Read our full Fortnite review. The conclusion to one of the best tactical role-playing series of all time, The Banner Saga 3 is nothing short of epic.
There are four different bosses to battle against, and the fluid system feels wonderful against even the smallest enemies.
Fans of Metroid-style games will also find plenty of options for traversal. With a few different tools at your disposal and the ability to quickly dart around environments to avoid being spotted by security, you truly feel like a ninja, and your relative fragility encourages moving around or behind enemies instead of trying to take them head-on.
Few games are better for mouse-and-keyboard players than turn-based strategy, and Into the Breach is among the best the genre has ever seen.
It avoids feeling like a simple retro nostalgia trip, however, instead offering clean, colorful, and detailed sprites that fit well with the science-fiction story.
Read our full Into the Breach review. Visuals typically can only get a game so far, but in the case of Gris , they could basically carry even the most mundane game without players complaining.
With environmental visual storytelling rather than traditional, text-based dialogue options and a simple control scheme, Gris can be enjoyed by just about anyone, and its art is gorgeous enough to justify stopping for several moments and just taking it all in.
The only thing keeping you from staying in the same spot forever is wanting to know what lies ahead. The Total War franchise has long been a leader in turn-based strategy, and the series headed to ancient China for an epic tale of struggle and warfare in Total War: Three Kingdoms.
Set in the year , the game features 12 different warlords from the classic Chinese epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms , and its gameplay is built on the back of a relationship system that recognizes the heroes that shaped classic Chinese literature.
Only with a calm head and steady leadership can you unite China. While the game can be challenging at first, it rewards those who stick with it and are willing to explore, experiment and take control of the world they have been given.
A multiplayer alternative to our winner, Divinity: Original Sin is our runner-up for best role-playing games for Mac. At this point, the only question is, when do we get Divinity: Original Sin 2?
And while the look is classic, the tone is modern. Undertale takes place in a world where monsters were locked Underground long ago after losing a war with humans.
Your character stumbles through the magic barrier that leads to the monster-filled Underground and must find her way back up top.
And while you can fight your way to victory, you can also win this game by being kind and sparing your enemies, and the way you play will affect how the game unfolds.
Undertale quickly became a fan favorite for its old-fashioned look and unique story and gameplay. And with your interactions having a major effect on how the game plays out, Undertale has excellent replay value.
Able to run on just about any Mac thanks to its old-school graphics, Undertale is AAA gameplay at a budget.
So, if you enjoy retro looking RPGs but with a modern sensibility, Undertale is for you. If you like your RPGs set a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, boy have we got you covered.
The sequel to what many consider one of the top computer games of all time, Knights of the Old Republic 2 KOTOR 2 takes place 4, years before the events of Episode I in the movie series.
Also like the original, the sequel was very late coming to the Mac, following the Windows release by a cool ten years. That said, the game was remastered and brought to modern times by Aspyr in You can now enjoy it with better graphics, sounds and an increased resolution.
And despite all those years, it remains, like the original, one of the best sci-fi RPG games you can find. Featuring a great story, interesting characters and pausable real-time combat, KOTOR 2 allows you to join the dark or the light side as you work to rebuild your connection to the Force and find the remaining Jedi after they have been mostly wiped out by the Sith.
You play as Red, a lounge singer who has had her voice stolen. But you do have a mysterious talking sword that can be outfitted, and re-outfitted, with various abilities as you battle your way through a futuristic city in search of answers.
Featuring the same gorgeous hand-drawn style as Bastion and a superior soundtrack that adjusts to the action, Transistor is as much fun to look at and listen to as it is to play.
But play you will, and here again, Transistor offers a unique blend of turn-based tactics and strategy planning and fast-paced action execution. Beautiful graphics, fantastic soundtrack, complex and rewarding gameplay and a great story, what else do you need?
How about system requirements modest enough so that just about anyone with a Mac can play it? With all that, Transistor was a cinch to make this list.
Darkest Dungeon is a roguelike think permadeath game with turn-based combat. But Darkest Dungeon is unique thanks to its Affliction System, where the characters in your party, in addition to suffering damage from enemies, will also suffer increasing levels of stress, paranoia and more as your quest continues, which will impact their ability to assist you in combat.
This leads to another fun and different feature, the need to rest and relax in between your battles; go into town, relax and level back up, then head back underground for more battles.
Featuring a unique 2D hand-drawn style and a gothic atmosphere, Darkest Dungeon is one of the most unique games on this list. And thanks to the 2D graphics, you can put yourself through this almost literal torture on just about any machine from the past several years.
Diablo practically defined the classic combat RPG genre. Around since the last millennium specifically , there still are no more fun ways to hack and slash your way to victory.
And though we waited 12 years for the third installment, when it came out there was a unanimous agreement that the wait was worth it.
Set 15 years after the events of the original game, you again lead a party of Rangers in a post-nuclear world, attempting to provide some law and order to a world gone monster crazy.
Wasteland 2 also features plenty of violence, a Mature rating, and requires a moderately powerful Mac to run. A unique take on either the dungeon crawler and the rhythm game, Crypt of the NecroDancer somehow manages to meld those two genres into a game that is hard but fair, and undeniably fun.
Think Dance Dance Revolution, but instead of just matching your moves to a beat, you have to match your moves to the beat to attack enemies, explore dungeons, and otherwise make your way through each level.
And it should run, or dance, on just about any machine. Great story and locations, interesting characters and updated graphics land Planescape Torment: Enhanced Edition firmly on our list.
As a bonus, just about anybody with a Mac can enjoy the game with its extremely modest system requirements. Lord of the Rings Online is a good example.
These are Mac games. No Wine, Parallels or Bootcamp will ever be needed. They all install natively on your Mac without the need of Windows or other. One of the main things we aim to provide that no one else does is a look at how these games perform on Macs.
Our games are all tested on a variety of different Macs under the exact same conditions, to make sure we can provide a decent idea of how well your Mac may run them.
And for your reference, this is how we interpret the results:. We all know how subjective reviews can be, and how games can be review-bombed by the public for reasons sometimes having nothing to do with the game itself.
But we make sure we pick only games that have been positively received by both professional reviewers and average gamers.
We always keep in mind price tags and production levels to give indies and AAA games equal chances. Looks are important, but fun gameplay is even more so.
And as this list shows, RPGs are more than just sword and sorcery. And we had to leave lots of good ones off.
So, which one is your favorite? Did we miss any you think belong on this list? Let us know in the comments section. Steven Marx has been playing games on the Macintosh since his brother brought home a used Mac k in How about Torchlight II.
But I think ultimately Ric and I decided to focus on the newer games if we were going with a series. Early versions of it were incredibly buggy and required lowering graphics and other settings just to make it sort of playable.
KOTOR2 has so far been much more stable for me. Definitely belongs on your list. And, really, what could be more fun than reproducing one of the most panic-striking career fields as a video game?
We kid, we kid. Human Resource Machine was developed by Tomorrow Corporation, comprising the minds behind critically-acclaimed titles World of Goo and Little Inferno, and it shows in its art style and clever puzzle mechanics.
Designed as a way to teach newcomers how to code or refresh the minds of long-time veterans , it's a fun way to learn a new trade, even if it does require a handful of instructional materials found outside the game.
An overhaul of the IGF-nominated "minimalist strategy" game Kingdom, Kingdom: New Lands adds a plethora of new content to an already solid foundation.
The experience itself takes concepts from beloved games like Sid Meier's Civilization series and reduces cumbersome menus down to a single button press.
Being a 2D pixel art game, your honest pursuit of erecting a castle and recruiting peasants to serve as servants is limited by its scale, but on Mac it feels right at home.
After all, its streamlining of otherwise convoluted mechanics is reminiscent of Apple's own design vision. Also you can ride a unicorn that poops out gold — incredible.
Though it may not appear as such at first glance, the art style in Darkest Dungeon is as nefarious as the gameplay, a testament to both the game's character and its complex combat system.
You'll have to not only select the perfect team out of fourteen different factions to choose from in Darkest Dungeon, but you'll also need to ensure that they're equipped with the right abilities in relation to their placement on the battlefield.
Yup, that's right: certain abilities are only effective in certain positions. Darkest Dungeon is like an amplified card game, and though it's made especially distinct by its art style and quirky narration, its accommodating system requirements make it the perfect fit for Mac.
